The Washington Capitals defeated the Vancouver Canucks 5-1 on Tuesday night,

with Alex Ovechkin scoring twice and passing Wayne Gretzky for the most away goals in NHL history.

Ovechkin has scored 403 of his 793 goals in his career away from home.

Gretzky holds the all-time record with 894 points.

When Vancouver withdrew Martin for an extra player with just over six minutes left,

Ovechkin nearly had a hat trick, but his rocket shot grazed the outside of the goal.

It was Ovechkin's 135th game-opening goal, tying Jaromir Jagr for the most in NHL history.

Ovechkin surpassed Gretzky 11:52 into the first period, hitting a one-timer from-

the left circle past Martin to give the Capitals a 2-0 lead.
